What is the exhaust of AI?
In ≡XHAUST [1], a desk fan points at machine generated videos of wind turbines. When the turbines on screen rotate, the fan also oscillates in synch. When the turbines stop, the fan also stops. The 5 second long clips of wind turbines range between looking photorealistic, like game animations, and as the loop of video progresses, impossibly confused renderings.
[1] About the title: the triple bar ‘≡’ as well as looking like a bit like an ‘E’, is a symbol with context-dependent meanings indicating equivalence of two different things and is used in maths and logic.
“The ≡ symbol is primarily used to indicate that two expressions are identical in value or form, meaning they are essentially the same in every conceivable way. It goes beyond mere equality by implying a deeper congruence between the two entities.” [2]
Gottlob Frege used it as a notion of identity, in which two statements (not necessarily in mathematics or formal logic) are identical if they can be freely substituted for each other without change of meaning.[3]
Thanks to Tom Schofield and Tim Shaw for advice and coding on the various versions.
